THE RAW TAPES #06: JB

JB grew up in the 90s to the tones of Hip Hop and G-Funk, became a huge Prodigy fan at age 10 and was acquainted with Dubstep in 2006 at the age of 17.

That experience really changed the life of a little punk who was up to no good at that time in his life. ‘You must understand that this music really means a lot to me; it’s a more meaningful and rewarding choice of life than what I originally came from’, the young buck explains. ‘As soon as I had scratched together enough money, I went straight out and bought a mixer, turntables and a bunch of proper kick-in-the-ass vinyls. Then I just practiced, practiced and practiced’.

All that practice has sure paid off. JB is tipped by key players on the scene as a future Dubstep don. Among those players was Revealomatic. ‘He heard me play a set one day, and was quite impressed. Particularly the tightness of my mixing’, JB tells us. ‘Revealomatic then gave me a spot on the US Dubstep netradio Dubterrain, which I did once a week for just over a year until last November when I switched to the highly esteemed sub.fm’.

The number and scope of gigs have also increased steadily over the years, and JB has already experienced deejaying alongside big international acts, in different cities across Denmark as well as in Sweden. His gigs include a residency at the Copenhagen club SKANK. ‘And I'm particularly very proud to have played at a OHOI! event, JB adds.

What’s next? JB tell us that he’s been given access to a proper vinyl record cutter in a studio in Copenhagen. ‘I’ve spent at a lot of time alone with that machine!’. JB has become a dubplate pusher in the sprawling Danish dubstep underground.

Style? ‘It’s got to be tight’, is JB’s first response. ‘There has to be tonal affinity within the mix, and I’m quite a perfectionist when it comes to juggling and chopping the lows, mids and highs. That gives the mix my personal imprint, if you could call it that’.

We think that you can definitely call it that. Give it up for one of Denmark’s best new DJs around.
