oneman

Oneman is one of the best DJs to come out of the UK in recent years, full stop. His skills, demonstrated on numerous platforms throughout the UK never cease to overwhelm and awe people. He plays a lot of old tunes, which is somewhat of an exception in a scene obsessed with the perpetual "moving forward never backwards" motion of dubplate culture. Again, as such a DJ, he should be confined to the ranks of the many DJs out there. But in 2007 and into 2008, Oneman most definitely moved ahead of the pack.

In 2007, getting booked for London's two flagship clubs, Forward (in the warm up slot) and DMZ (in the closing slot), but in truth, he'd already built a considerable following with his show and sets at illegal raves like House and Chicken.

'I just wanna make people dance and people dance to good beats,' says Oneman.

When Loefah put him forward for Mary Anne Hobbs' Generation Bass showcase in 2008, his talent as a DJ was undeniable, yet mixing early DMZ releases into old UK garage records will only take you so far. Instead he spent the next two years walking a new path, eventually ushering in a new generation of producers and sounds distinct from the grime, funky, dubstep, and garage scenes that inspired them.

By summer, armed with peerless mixing skills and new Serato tricks, Oneman would reach Slimzee circa 2003, Hatcha '04, or DMZ '06 levels of creativity, putting clear water between himself and the very hot competition. He broke one of the records of the year, Girl Unit's "Wut", and launched his 502 label with two fresh new artists, Fis-T and Jay Weed.

His style as DJ embraces every aspect of UK bass music – and then some: Garage, 2step, Grime, Dubstep, UK Funky, you name it. On top of that, he has a flair for dropping that unexpected bomb every now and then, pulling out gems from his massive collection when you least expected it, but always at the right time.

As a prime example of these skills, we weren’t really sure what to choose, ‘cause its all so damn good. But have a go at the following links – and then come check the Oneman out at the VALVE/OHOI arena at RAW 2011!!!
